About the The Valois Tapestries:The Valois Tapestries, also known as “The Valois Tapestries of the Story of Queen Artemisia,” are a set of tapestries that date back to the 1580s. These tapestries are renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship and intricate detail. They were commissioned to celebrate the wedding of Catherine de’ Medici’s granddaughter, Marguerite de Valois, to Henry of Navarre (the future King Henry IV of France) in 1572. The tapestries depict scenes from the life of Queen Artemisia II of Caria, an ancient Greek queen who ruled in the 5th century BCE. However, it’s important to note that the scenes portrayed in the tapestries are not historically accurate depictions of Queen Artemisia; instead, they draw inspiration from the classical tradition and mythology. The Valois Tapestries were woven in the atelier of Marc de Comans and François de la Planche in the Netherlands. The workshop was renowned for producing high-quality tapestries during the late 16th century.
