On the one hand, they are paintings of geometrically regular patterns in which hand-brushed surfaces are suppressed in favor of the more uniform flatness provided by the palette knife. Upon close inspection, however, the borders of his interlocking bands and fixed-positioned squares of color reveal themselves to be carefully hand-rendered rather than taped-off and the knifing technique yields a subtle, flinty transparency that allows the barest hint of a middle grey under-painting to show itself from below the surface.
