NEW Arcadia Publishing Beaufort County, North Carolina, NC 9780738506616 Images Named by the English in honor of Lord Somerset, the Duke of Beaufort, Beaufort County enjoys its greatest natural resource in the picturesque Pamlico River and the numerous creeks that drain into it. The waterways of the county have for some three centuries served as a catalyst for economic opportunity as well as a setting for recreational activities. An engaging pictorial retrospective, Beaufort County, North Carolina will introduce readers to several generations of families who settled along the banks of the Pamlico and inland. Vintage photographs reveal these Beaufort County families proudly pictured in their homes, their schools, their businesses, and their places of worship. Family stories, passed down as treasured heirlooms over the years, shed light upon a way of life that has almost vanished in modern America. Natives will recall the splendor of Beaufort County as an early-twentieth-century tourist destination, when the Duke University Blue Devils Band entertained guests at the dance pavilion of the grand old Bay View Hotel. Numerous images depict sites of the early American Indian villages that thrived before the European settlement of the region, the debris and devastation left after the Hurricane of 1913, the commercial fishing fleets that plied the local waters to offer nourishment and economic gain for local families, and the festivals, fairs, and parades enjoyed by Beaufort County residents of all ages. The towns that make up the county and their unique traits are explored and celebrated, while the role of each in the greater development of the county is encapsulated in a story told through charming historic photographs and postcards. Durham, North Carolina, North Carolina, Images of America, Paperback
Durham, North Carolina, North Carolina, Images of America, Paperback Capturing much of what life was like in the rapidly growing city of Durham, North Carolina, during the first half of the 20th century. This rare collection of postcards represents many aspects of Durham, especially the bustling downtown district. In the early 1900s, Durham was a small but budding town with a population of less than 7,000. However, a tremendous number of people began to pour into the city, and by 1930 the population had increased to more than 50,000.That explosion of growth was attributable in large measure to the rapid expansion of the tobacco and textile industries, as well as to the endowment of nearby Trinity College (1924) by tobacco magnate James B. Duke, which led to the institution’s renaming as the now-renowned Duke University. In only a few years, the town’s skyline began to be transformed with the construction of modern office buildings and grand mansions.

North Carolina Transportation Museum, North Carolina, Paperback
North Carolina Transportation Museum, North Carolina, Paperback Established in 1896, Spencer Shops was the Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility. After five decades of providing thousands of jobs to craftsmen and laborers, Spencer Shops and its company town became a victim of technology as diesel-electrics replaced steam locomotives. By August 1960, Spencer Shops had all but ceased operation, its workforce dwindling to a level 95 percent smaller than it had been in the early 1950s. Even as rust and pigeons ruled the largely abandoned complex, a dedicated group of state officials and railroad enthusiasts saw its promise as a state historic site. After years of hard work, Spencer Shops experienced its rebirth with the creation of the North Carolina Transportation Museum (NCTM) in 1977. Today, the impressive facility celebrates not only the rich history of Spencer but also the wide array of transportation history in the Tar Heel State.
Lincoln County, North Carolina, North Carolina, Images of America, Paperback
Lincoln County, North Carolina, North Carolina, Images of America, Paperback Situated in North Carolina’s historic piedmont region, Lincoln County possesses some of the Tar Heel State’s most picturesque scenery: the shoreline of Lake Norman on its eastern boundary, the winding path of the Catawba River, and the rolling foothills across the countryside. Within this beautiful setting, early pioneering families established homesand communities as early as the 1700s, and since that time, the county has grown and developed, both socially and economically, yet has been able to maintain its small-town charm and character. This volume, containing over 200 black-and-white images, invites readers to experience a Lincoln County of decades and centuries past, a time marked by frontier spirit, dusty main streets, early merchantswho carried all the necessities, and a slower pace of life. Lincoln County explores the personal side of the county’s history, showcasing everyday life in Lincolnton and the smaller rural communities, such as Pumpkin Center, Triangle, Iron Station, Lowesville, and Denver. From parades and farmers’ day celebrations in downtown Lincolnton, to group portraits of turn-of-the-century children and athletes at various early schoolhouses, such as the Mary Wood School and S. Ray Lowder School, to scenes of troops leaving for a variety of wartime service, these images document the everyday struggles, challenges, and achievements that Lincoln Countians faced and endured over the years.
